Kelly’s Bio: I’m a late bloomer, but I’ve made up time with good luck. Good luck came with extraordinary mentors in my undergratuate work which consisted of researching and writing about sex and spirituality, women and religion, and the bias fostered as a result of biased interpretations of the Bible. Studying psychology and religion simultaneously resulted in my conclusion that Jesus of Nazareth functioned more as a vigilante social worker than a prophet.
Analyzing hate crimes in Los Angeles showed the most severe crimes (Assault with a Deadly Weapon), were most often perpetrated on those perceived as part of the LGBTQ+ population; race/ethnicity and religious affiliation elicited hate crimes consisting of less deadly assaults, while religious institutions were most often victims of Vandalism and Criminal Threat.
When priest abuse of innocent children exploded the headlines, I was interviewing victims for a law firm, documenting their story of abuse at the hands of a priest or other religious personnel.
My master’s program was accomplished with a relatively small cohort of intelligent bleeding hearts who I’ll never forget. The program and professors at UCLA were 5 Star. It sat me down in the therapists’ chair immediately, hence I’ve been practicing psychotherapy since 2006 while in training at my first internship at AIDS Service Center and in 2007, an internship at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. These internships uncovered my super power: the ability to establish rapport quickly, and looking back I see that it was the budding of the relational approach I employ in my practice today. Because both internships addressed issues surrounding sex and sexual orientation, my ability to speak frankly facilitated a level of comfort enabling communication about sensitive issues in a diverse population.
Immediately after graduation I worked on a political campaign in Atlanta, and then started a four year stint at AIDS Healthcare Foundation, and then a six month stint at Las Encinas Psychiatric Hospital where I did group work (loved it!) while working on licensure.
In 2013 I started a private practice in Larchmont, and then on Wilshire Boulevard near the Wilshire Ebell until COVID dictated a mass exit from our commercial office spaces. Today I find most clients are quite satisfied with virtual psychotherapy, but once in a while a client will want to be seen in person, which I quite enjoy.
On a personal note, I love sunrise and sunsets, growing roses, my pets, my children, my grandchildren, my friends, cooking, gardening, reading, traveling, and being an activist in my community.
